Between 1773 and the spring of 1776 there were a series of effusive eruptions that invaded the southwestern slopes of Vesuvius, filling the valleys to the right and left of the present-day toponym “Osservatorio”. In the winter months of 1776, Vesuvius showed a striking new landscape thanks to the snow that, in the midst of the volcano’s activity, completely covered the crater.
