Soggetto / Subject: Vue de l’Etna prise d’un jardin du prince de biscarie creusée dans les laves de 1669 près de Catane / View of Mount Etna taken from a garden belonging to the Prince of Biscaria, dug into the lava in 1669 near Catania

Its eruptions have both destroyed and renewed the city, rebuilt in grand Baroque style with lava stone after the 1693 earthquake. For Grand Tour travelers, Catania was both a gateway to the summit and a place of wonder, where nature and culture intertwine. The bond with the volcano is deep: Etna is both a threat and a source of life, a sacred presence and a natural spectacle that continues to fascinate visitors from afar.
