In the 18th century, the ascent of Mount Etna was one of the most sought-after experiences of the Grand Tour. Travelers, scientists, and artists undertook the climb as both a physical and spiritual challenge. From the summit, the view was vast: Sicily, the sea, and the volcano’s shadow cast on the horizon. Etna was seen as an extreme place where nature revealed its primal power. Eruptions, freezing altitudes, and deep silence offered a sublime and terrifying spectacle, inspiring awe, fear, and reflection. The volcano thus became a symbol of the meeting between science and poetry, between reason and wonder.
