Between the 19th and early 20th century, Vulcano Island was the site of intense mining activity focused on extracting sulfur and alum, used in the chemical and textile industries. The main quarries were located in the Piano area and on the slopes of La Fossa, where rudimentary systems were built for mining, calcining, and transporting materials. Lava was manually broken and fired in stone kilns. Work was harsh and often seasonal, attracting both local and migrant labor, shaping an island economy tied to fire and earth.Today, remains of kilns, paths, slag heaps, and minor structures survive in a landscape marked by industrial memory. These quarries represent a rare example of industrial heritage in a volcanic environment and reveal a little-known chapter of Aeolian economic and social history.
